Things went disastrously wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the blow of this epic fail.

This crisis has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to work. At this point, it feels like we're doomed. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
Dude, This Is Pathetic Yet Somehow Entertaining
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but burst out chuckling. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer level of unadulterated absurdity and just throws its hands up, opting for laughter as a coping mechanism.
But then, you remember that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a sigh.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of bewilderment. You question about the nature of it all. Was this some kind of twisted art experiment?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The tsunami struck suddenly, ravaging entire towns in its sweep. Buildings shattered like house of cards, and the roar that ensued was deafening. Thousands were buried beneath wreckage, their fate precarious. The severity of the disaster was unprecedented, leaving survivors to grapple a future forever scarred.

Awful Day Ever
It all started with a case of terrible hair. I couldn't do it to look presentable. As I was running out the door, I trippedover and spilled all over myself. To make matters worse, I was completely running behind for work.

By the time I got home, I was exhausted. This day, this horrific day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out terribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror check here movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
